Installation Tips For Insulated Wall Panels

By Stephen Collins

Wall panels are usually flat pieces of material cut into rectangular shape that is an exposed and visible covering for walls. They are functional and decorative by providing insulation and soundproofing with a uniform appearance, durability and replaceable. These can reduce cost in construction as consistent appearance is provided with its paneled surface and no finishing material like paint is required.

They can be finished on only one side if their back would be against walls of brick or concrete, or assembled into appropriate frameworks as the substitute. This is why the insulated wall panels have been becoming the popular choice for industrial, institutional and commercial projects. You could build them in accordance to specifications which results in labor savings and in reduced material waste.

Manufacturing of these materials is according to your specifications, advance planning is important for electrical chases. This would avoid costly modifications that consumes time during the installation process and do not horizontally cut panels to prevent structural performance being compromised. Determine if you need equipment while at design phase such as forklift or crane because of their size.

Organize the installation through proper storage, handling and weather protection and make the process more efficient. Level areas not closer than 3 inches to the ground is where to store them and organize their sequence according to when they would be installed. Separate those meant for various floors and use a breathable and protective tarp in keeping them dry.

Correctly and tightly install them while giving full support to them and ensure this by slipping them on the wall plate. Be sure you placed them in a proper order starting from the valleys and corners then going outward. Properly seal the void and joints once installed using adhesive to minimize the leakage of air and maintain their durability.

Protect them from water penetration and use weather protection like housewrap for preventing moisture deterioration. Follow the installation guidelines the manufacturer of housewraps gave and be sure to flash every penetration. Windows will still leak some water eventually so use flashing around and under the units for directing water away from the structure.

These have high insulating properties and air sealing ones which most people underestimate and will allow you to buy smaller HVAC. Work with contractors for HVAC and make sure they considered the lower levels of air infiltration. Proper sizing is important because underused systems will not reach a rate for steady operations resulting in short cycling which results with less energy efficiency and more maintenance required.

Important factors for determining proper HVAC sizing include wall construction type, home size with every floor being analyzed and building orientation. Other ones included also are specs of doors and windows like location, fenestration rating, number of units and insulation value. Another inclusion are air infiltration amount and number and type of fireplaces.

Remove debris before panel placement from plate areas, provide foundations with enough support and before setting them, study installation drawings. Store adhesives in warm areas to get the best results when applying in cold weather. Then provide enough ventilation for maintaining indoor air quality.
