How To Achieve Distribution Network Optimization

By Christopher Brown

As the supervisor of a particular department, you are the one who is typically called to explain why things are not going as they should. Therefore, to avoid these situations, you have to be proactive at all times. If you handle the marketing and distributions of products, then you need to ensure you have done all you can to ensure distribution network optimization. This is not always easy, but if you stick to some basic rules, it will not seem like an impossible task.

To correct a situation you need to have identified what has gone wrong. This way, the mitigation measures you put in place will be effective. At this point, the best way to go this is to look at the market. You can take inventory of your products to see what is being sold and what is not. Additionally, you should look at the regions with low sales, and talk to the vendors and customers in each region, to see what they think is going wrong.

To increase your distribution rate, in most cases, you have two options. You can change your target market or vary the products. The option you choose will depend on the information gathered in the field. In some cases simply rebranding the products will produce the desired effect.

Sometimes, you will notice that a particular sales person is not meeting the company set goals. By looking at how they work you will be able to tell what the problem is. However, before you immediately terminate their contract try moving them to a different department. Ideally, you should rotate your sales representatives at least yearly.

Before you make any decisions about the products or the market, you need to consult with other stakeholders, and this should be done from the beginning. This way, the decisions made will not be biased and will have been well deliberated. The stakeholders you consult should include representatives from every department.

Professionals estimate that to come up with effective long term plans, the planning process should take at least four months. However, you will need to make some immediate changes to minimize your losses. What you could do is draft some short term fixes for the more pressing problems. From here, start making the changes in stages.

Although you have marketing and distribution experts in your employ, sometimes you need to outsource help. This will ensure that the decisions are unbiased. Additionally, when you hire a consultant, they will look at the situation with fresh eyes. They can, therefore, identify things you have overlooked while offering you solutions based on their experience.

While you might be willing to go to any lengths to save the company, do not consider forging the sales projections. By working with the real numbers, you could ask for more money to be directed to your department. This way, you can implement the changes you have planned enabling the business to recover its investment and then benefit from the profits.
