What To Look For When Using Unique Fabrics In Your Next Sewing Project

By Anna Evans

If you love the idea of making your own clothing or household items or have just brought a piece of beautiful fabric home that you just had to have you may be wondering what the next step is. Figuring out how to use unique fabrics in various sewing projects can be difficult but it is well worth the time and effort to do so. Regardless of whether you are making a piece of clothing or are creating something functional to use in your home, knowing how to evaluate fabrics for their suitability is one of the handiest things you can learn.

One thing that can be wonderful about travel is seeing the beautiful fabrics and garments that other cultures may produce. It is often really tempting to bring samples home with the idea of using them in future projects. Some materials will have equivalents that you can find in your area while others may need more research in order to find out how they can be used best.

You may also find material that you would want to use by looking in vintage clothing stores. It is not uncommon for crafters to purchase clothing or textile pieces that may not fit but which could be turned into other items that are more up to date in terms of styling. Because you may not know exactly what an older piece is made of it may be hard to tell whether it will work for a particular project.

The pattern you will be using can be a great help when you evaluate whether a particular piece of material will work well. Look at the other fabrics listed. Are any of them similar to the type of material you would like to use? If so, your fabric may work even if it is not specifically listed on the pattern itself.

You should look at each piece of fabric that you buy. You need to figure out whether it is heavy, medium or light weight. You also need to figure out whether it flows or if it is too thick and heavy. Sometimes that is a benefit if you need your piece to have a lot of structure and you do not want to have to fuse or reinforce it. Another thing to consider is whether you will need a piece of material to be able to stretch when it is made into a finished garment.

Vintage textiles can be beautiful but they can also be delicate. If you want to alter a vintage piece so that it fits you better or is more modern looking you may need to be careful. It may turn out that lace or other materials are delicate and end up falling apart if you try to do too much with them.

You should also think about what the item will be used for if it is not being worn. Some people like to use fabrics to make their own pillows or to cover furniture. If you are using delicate material that will not stand up to hard use then it may not be the best choice for this kind of project.

Of course, if you are really stumped about whether or not to use a particular piece of textile in your upcoming project, speaking to someone at a fabric store may be helpful. They may be able to suggest ways to thicken up material that is too thin or how to stiffen up material that may have too much drape. Then, in the end, even though there may be more work involved you will be happier with the project that you do create.
