Understanding What Mold Testing Illinois Involves

By Betty Sanders

For those that are suspecting there may be growth of molds in their home, it might be on walls or in rooms. They may even be found within closets and it is important to know type of mold before attempting to do any clean-up. There are versions that are harmless and may only cause minor allergies like itching of eyes, irritation or headaches. When it comes to mold testing Illinois residents need to know what it involves.

There are different types of kits that can be used and they operate differently. There is the lift tape kit that works best when you are already sure you have molds in the house and need to identify what type it is. It is useful when it comes to testing surfaces of floors, furniture and walls. In order to use it, you peel back the tape from its surface before you gently press the sticky side. The pressing is done on surfaces where the molds are found. You then replace the covering and take the samples for tests in the laboratory.

The instant kit does the confirmation in about 10 minutes. It however only confirms that what you have is mold and not the specific type. You will still need lab analysis for determination of whether it is toxic or not. It is used by removing the swab from the tube before swabbing the suspect area. The swab is then taken back into the tube and left for some 10 minutes after shaking in the test tube. The color is checked against a chart to determine final result.

There is also a viable kit that is probably the one with the most uses. It does not need any laboratory analysis. It is used for establishing whether mold is present and also the strain. It is also useful for testing air quality.

The viable kits have petri dishes which contain some gel in them. In carrying out this test, there is swabbing of the suspected substance before it gets rubbed over the gel. The lid then gets replaced which enables germination of molds in between 3 to 7 days. In case you are testing air quality in a room, two kits will be required. After lids are removed from both, one is placed inside the room and another one outside, close to that room.

The kits will be left in place for one hour before you replace the lids. After 7 days elapse, you should be having molds growing. You compare results from both sets. If both of them produce same strains it means the molds are just representative of what is present in the general environment. In case of differences, the samples will need to be taken for tests.

There are situations in which the tests might yield inconsistent results. Determination of toxicity might be a challenge. Testing for molds and testing for their toxicity are two different things, which makes it difficult to get conclusive results.

The decision on the way to eradicate the molds is a challenge as well. This is because most eradication is done in the same manner. This means knowing molds that are present does not change mode of removal.
